05.06.2018
The center will open at the state educational establishment Kopys Kindergarten – Secondary School of Orsha District and the environmental institution Ecological Environment on 6 June to mark Day of Environment. The project was implemented in cooperation with the Belarusian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the UN Development Program in the Republic of Belarus as part of the GEF Small Grants Program.

The official opening ceremony will be attended by Belarus’ Minister of Natural Resources and EnvironmentAndrei Khudyk, local authorities and representatives of the education department.

The information center will train groups of volunteers among locals, mainly the youth, to discover unauthorized landfill sites and warehouses with old pesticides and chemicals, and also containers used for their storage. The project will help carry out the final inventory of places with hazardous chemical substances and take measures for their destruction with a view to improving the environmental situation in the region and contribute to the development of a sustainable management system for hazardous chemical waste.

Plans are in place to involve students in the clean-up and natural landscape restoration efforts as part of summer educational programs.
