CIS Interstate Environmental Council expected to convene in Minsk in August

Minsk is planning to host the 6th meeting of the Interstate Environmental Council of the states – parties to the Commonwealth of Independence States (hereinafter – CIS IEC) in August 2020.
The CIS IEC is the sectoral cooperation body in charge of environmental protection policies in the CIS. The CIS Interstate Environmental Council has held five meetings so far.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus, as a relevant body of government, is actively involved in the work of the CIS Interstate Environmental Council.

The CIS Interstate Environmental Council was established in accordance with the CIS Agreement on Cooperation in Environmental Protection States which was signed in Minsk on 31 May 2013. The agreement was signed by Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Ukraine (with a proviso). Uzbekistan participates in the CIS Interstate Environmental Council as an observer .
The 5th meeting of the CIS Interstate Environmental Council was held in Yerevan, Armenia on 17-18 September 2019, under the chairmanship of Armenian Minister of Environment Erik Grigoryan. A Belarusian delegation was led by Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Andrei Khudyk.
The meeting reviewed a wide range of environmental issues. The parties exchanged experience in such areas as waste management, unification of methods for calculating air pollution emissions and implementation of the state environmental policy and other issues.
Andrey Khudyk made a report on the implementation by Belarus of its commitments to the fight against climate change.
In accordance with the regulations on the CIS Interstate Environmental Council, Belarus’ Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Minister Andrei Khudyk was elected co-chairman of the CIS Interstate Environmental Council during the 5th meeting. Belarus will take over the chairmanship in the CIS Interstate Environmental Council at the 6th meeting.
