It is a unique natural complex that comprises an exceptional variety of different types of forests, meadows and swamps, a unique floodplain complex of the Berezina River, many large and small rivers, and unique lakes. The unique natural area has been preserved intact.
The territory of the Berezinsky Biosphere Reserve is home to the Big Five of Europe’s large mammals – elk, bison, bear, wolf and lynx – living in the wild. The Reserve's territory is home to the largest group of Brown Bear in the country (at least 75 individuals)

Fifty-six species of mammals have been recorded in the Reserve (more than 70% of all the species known in Belarus). For some animal species, the Reserve is the only or one of the few places where they were recorded in Belarus. These are mammals of the shrew family - Even-toothed and Eurasian Least Shrews; dragonflies - Siberian Winterdamsel, Green Snaketail, Green Hawker; butterflies – Violet Copper, Thor's Fritillary; Formica Forsslundi; Great Raft Spider.
The Reserve is included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere programme; it has the status of a wetland of international importance (Ramsar site), an Important Plant Area and a globally Important Bird Area.
