The protected area was created to preserve the natural complex of the Pripjat River valley as a standard natural landscape, and the gene pool of the plant and animal world of the Belarusian Polesie.

Uniqueness: The National Park has been designated a globally Important Bird Area, an Important Plant Area, and a Ramsar site.
For the most part, the Park consists of picturesque forests. These are mainly pine forests and oak groves, with birch, alder, ash, hornbeam, aspen, and occasionally maple, lime, and tree-like willow stands. The forests of the National Park are considered the most preserved among the floodplains of the Pripjat and Dnepr rivers. Considering their rich biodiversity, they are unique for the entire East European Plain. The Park's flora is represented by 1,073 species of higher plants. Forty-seven plant species are listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Belarus. To name a few, these are Northern Firmoss, Garland Flower, Martagon Lily, Floating Fern, White Water Lily, Eastern Pasqueflower, and others.
The National Park is home to 45 species of mammals. The most numerous ungulates are European Red Deer and Roe Deer.
The Red Book species present in the Park include European Mink, European Bison, Eurasian Lynx, Badger, Garden Dormouse, European Edible Dormouse, and Hazel Dormouse.
The National Park is home for 256 bird species, accounting for 98 per cent of the bird fauna of Polesie and 79 per cent of the avifauna of the entire country! Out of all bird species listed in the Red Data Book of Belarus, 65 are found in the Pripyatsky National Park. It is more than 90 per cent of the country’s Red Book bird species! These include Common Crane, Black Stork, Short-eared Owl, Green Woodpecker, Azure Tit, and White-tailed Eagle.
The Pripjat floodplain is the largest migration route for migratory birds in Europe. Starting from March, thousands of geese, ducks, waders, terns, gulls, storks, cormorants, and other bird groups pass through it in endless streams.
