Uniqueness: The Nature Reserve is situated in Nalibokskaya Pushcha - one of the largest and most ancient forest areas in the Republic of Belarus and the whole of Eastern Europe. With numerous streams and rivers running through it, the forest is a unique natural complex that has become home to many rare plants and animals. It is Nalibokskaya Pushcha that is a genetic reservoir of Trout and Grayling.
The one and only wood grouse nursery in Belarus is found in the Nature Reserve. Its main task is to preserve the Western European subspecies of Wood Grouse - Mayer Wood Grouse (Tetrao urogallus major), which is on the verge of extinction. In total, there are approximately 400 individuals of the species in Belarus, most of them are found in Nalibokskaya Pushcha. Meanwhile, in the EU countries - Poland, Germany, Lithuania - Mayer Wood Grouse has almost disappeared in the wild.
More than 50 species of animals listed as protected in the Red Data Book of the Republic of Belarus are found here. The Nature Reserve is also home to one of the largest Bison populations in Belarus - about 90 individuals. The Nature Reserve is of great importance for the conservation of populations of many bird species during nesting, wintering and migration; it has the status of an Important Plant Area and an Important Bird Area.
This is the only place in Belarus with hundreds of wild Tarpan Horses of Konik breed, which were given to the Nature Reserve free of charge by the Netherlands in 2019.
